Can Back Pain Be Managed?

Being able to manage your back pain can be a lifelong commitment. Of course preventing pain would be the most ideal situation but since you have back pain, then being able to manage the pain is second best.

Back pain is caused by strained muscles, tendons or ligaments. Usually this occurs due to increased activity or heavy lifting.

When lifting heavy objects, pay particular attention to the way you are lifting the object. The heaviest part should be close to your body. Your back needs to be straight and no twisting of the body’s torso should be done. Always think back pain management when engaging in this type of work.

Don’t stand with flat feet while bending over. Try placing one foot on a small stool while engaging in an activity that requires you to stand in one place for some time. This will help in reducing the back strain. When vacuuming, use your entire body while pushing with your legs.

Pushing heavy objects is less stressful than pulling. Always push with your legs.

Living a sedentary lifestyle almost always guarantees problems with back pain. Exercise regularly and as part of your back pain management, engage in flexibility and strength exercises. This will include exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles as well as the legs and back muscles. Losing weight also will help tremendously in managing back pain. Less body mass will be kinder to your back muscles.

When driving long distance, take a few “coffee breaks” and get out of the car to stretch. When sitting at a desk job, get up and move around or go for a 15 minute walk. And…if you smoke, stop this habit as your body’s ability to deliver nutrients is affected by smoking cigarettes.

By applying the above recommendations, you will find that you will be able to manage your back pain and increase the health of your body.
